    Passport Oregon

Four of the Creston cohort and volunteers went to Silver Falls State Park, hiked a 2mi loop, and saw some waterfalls. It was chilly at first, but ended up being a gorgeous day. From the schedule and map provided, the group had trouble finding the trail head mentioned, and lost a lot of time searching around until we settled on a different trail. We did not end up doing the provided "leaf rubbing" activity, but the kids were stoked on the waterfalls, caverns, and racing each other down the trail. It was really beautiful there, with all the fall colors, and it was great to see the kids exploring the trails - some of them were even naming plant species?? However, there seems to be some attendance issues with the cohort.
Other notes: the coffee place selected on the itinerary (Gear Up) was closed. At Silver Falls State Park, the South Day Use area is better. Bring trail mix and sandwiches that 5th graders would like.

Wish we would have gotten to go to the lighthouse (ran out of time), but it was awesome to see the kids have a great time. I could really see the difference between when they felt like they were being supervised/told what to do and when they felt like they were having fun doing what they wanted to do. I love that Passport Oregon didn't even discourage the kids from getting totally soaking wet and covered in sand! They loved it!
